This picture was processed in CS3.

First I adjusted the curves to brighten the picture, specifically this adorable boy's face and hands.

Next I sharpened with unsharp mask.

Then used PW's "Old West" action, minus the "warmness" and "special tweak" and I took the "dark layer" down to 42%.
